Encoding

How to convert DVD to x264?

  • Rip the DVD to your HardDisk using DVD Decrypter. Click Here for the guide.
  • Download and Install AviSynth and the latest version of MeGUI.
(Please note you need .NET Framework Version 2.0 to be installed for MeGUI to work).
  • Once started MeGUI will ask you to download Updated files.
Click Update and all updates will be downloaded automatically (When prompted to Import Profiles, press Ctrl + A to select to import all profiles).

*IMP* : Presently due to Nero's EULA the neroaacenc had to be pulled off of MeGUI Update Server so you will get "Error: neroaacenc could not be found on the server".

Manually download Nero Digital Audio package and extract neroaacenc.exe to "C:\Program Files\megui\tools\neroaacenc\"
(Substituting C: with the drive letter you installed MeGUI to).

Next goto Tools --> Update --> Right Click neroaacenc and select Ignore updates for this file.
  • Go Tools --> D2V Creator.
Select the .vob file, you created using DVD Decrypter, as the Video Input.
    Select "Demux all Audio Tracks".
Choose the location to save the d2v file to in d2v Project Output.
Check "On completion load files", "and close" and click on the Queue button.

In the main window goto Queue tab and click Start.
  • In the AviSynth Script Creator window that pops up, under "Resolution Crop" check Resize and Suggest Resolution.
    Set the width to 672.
Then check Crop and click on the Auto Crop button.

Switch to the Filters tab, under Deinterlacing check Source is Anime if your source is anime, then click the Analyse button.
Under Filters set Resize Filter to Lanczos(Sharp), check Noise Filter and set it to Minimal Noise.
Under Mpeg Options check Colour Correction.
Click the Save button to save the .avs script.
  • Switch to the Input tab in the MeGUI main window, under Video select Codec as x264, Container as MP4 and Video Profile as HQ-Slower

(Note : If you are looking for better compression and hence better quality and don't mind the increased encoding time you can also try HQ-Slowest or HQ-Insane in order of quality. HQ-Slower is a good compromise between Quality and Encoding Time)

Under Audio click on the X button to remove the audio stream.
Click on the AutoEncode button at the bottom.
  • Calculating number of CD's :
Select a suitable AC3 Audio file created by MeGUI in step 1. Its always preferable to select a 5.1 channel track, if present. Use VLC Media Player to play the AC3 file and make sure its an English Track, also make sure its not the commentry track or the likes. It should be the main movie track.

Once done check the selected track's size, and enter it below.

You can check the movie's runtime when playing the DVD in VLC Media Player. You just need an approximate runtime.

AC3 File Size (in MB)   Movie Runtime (in Minutes)
  • In the Automatic Encoding window that pops up, under Output Options check Split Output and enter 700 in the box provided, if you are going to use more than 1 CD.
Under Size and Bitrate set Storage Medium to the number of CD's recommended in the previous step.
Check "Add additional content (audio, subs, chapters)" and click on Queue button.
  • In the Adaptive Mux window that pops up, under Audio select the AC3 file you chose earlier.
    Click the Go button.

In the main window switch to the Queue tab and click Start.

When the encoding process finishes you will be left with a .mkv file within your working directory, this is your final movie file play it in VLC Media Player to make sure everything is alright.
